Armenian Foreign Ministry summons Belarusian ambassador amid claims by Lukašenka of no future for Armenia outside the Union State

February 9, BPN. The Armenian Foreign Ministry summoned Belarusian Ambassador Aliaksandr Kaniuk on February 8 amid claims by Aliaksandr Lukašenka of no future for Armenia outside the Union State, the Novosti-Armenia news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahan Hunanyan as saying.

Other than the fact that the Belarusian diplomat showed up at the Foreign Ministry, the spokesperson did not disclose any further details.

Earlier in the day, Hunanyan wrote on Facebook that “Lukašenka’s peculiar geopolitical analysis aims to serve, first of all, his own internal political agenda and has nothing to do with Armenia and its foreign policy.”

In an interview with Russian TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov, Lukašenka said that most post-Soviet countries, including Armenia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and others, could join the Union State formed by Russia and Belarus. Referring to the Armenian state, he noted: “Armenia has nowhere to go. Do you think someone needs them? They have already realized it [Prime Minister Pashinyan] Nikol Vovaevich has already seen it.”
