EU and UK demand the release of political prisoner and philosopher Uladzimir Mackievič, on hunger strike for 13 days
February 16, BPN. The EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Eamon Gilmore, demanded via Twitter to release political prisoner Uladzimir Mackievič, 65, who has been on hunger strike for 13 days in Minsk detention center No. 1.
“Uladzimir Mackievič, philosopher and civil society activist, has gone on hunger strike against his unlawful detention. The exercise of fundamental freedoms must be respected and ensured. Release Uladzimir!” the message says.
A similar demand was made by the EU Delegation and the British Embassy in Belarus. It is posted on the pages of diplomatic missions on Facebook.
Mackievič has been on hunger strike for 13 days. He gave up water in the evening of February 14. During the first 11 days of the hunger strike, he lost seven kilograms and now he feels ill, his colleagues reported on Facebook.
