Putin praises the progress of integration with Belarus at a meeting in the Kremlin, Lukašenka laments Western sanctions
February 18, BPN. Moscow and Minsk “have made serious progress in the construction of the Union State,” said Russian president Vladimir Putin at a meeting with Aliaksandr Lukašenka in the Kremlin on February 18.
“We are meeting regularly and we have a lot to talk about,” the Russian president was quoted as saying by his press service. “Last year was very productive… First of all, we made serious progress in the construction of the Union State, our colleagues worked hard and prepared 28 good programs, updating our previous plans.”
Putin pointed out the “solid growth” in trade between the two countries, up to almost $ 35 billion. He said that this “very good indicator” demonstrated “the benefits of integration” between Belarus and Russia.
In turn, Lukašenka said: “It is very important now, at the beginning of the year, to be in a position to resist any economic pressure.” He stressed that various restrictions were in effect “not only against Belarus, but also against Russia.” “It is more difficult for us with these sanctions. That’s why I would like to inform you on this issue as well,” Lukašenka said.
He said he was glad to “at least dilute the Western elite a little,” referring to Putin’s recent numerous talks with world leaders.
Last year, according to Lukašenka, the economies of Belarus and Russia “were developing at a really good pace.” “As you have correctly said, the development of the economy already shows that nothing will work for them, they will not be able to strangle us in any way. I think we will agree to create more momentum here,” he said.
