65% of citizens approved amendments to the Constitution – CEC
February 28, BPN. Amendments to the Constitution were approved by 65.16% of citizens who have the right to vote at the referendum, the Central Election Commission (CEC) reported.
10.07% of voters voted against it.
The distribution of votes “in favour” by regions: Mahiloŭ region 71.69%, Homiel’ 71.08%, Viciebsk 70.12%, Minsk 64.58%, Brest 64.21%, Hrodna 63.40%, the city of Minsk 55.13%.
The distribution of votes “against”: the city of Minsk 13.23%, Hrodna region 10.95%, Mahiloŭ 10.40%, Minsk 9.63%, Homiel’ 9.20%, Viciebsk 8.57%, Brest 7.74%.
The turnout was 78.63%. According to the CEC, the highest turnout was in the Mahiloŭ region with 82.94%, the lowest – in the city of Minsk with 71.37%. 42.93% of voters voted early.
Key proposed amendments include legitimisation of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, a restoration of the rule limiting the presidency by one person to a maximum of two terms, introduction of immunity for former presidents, monopolization of the state ideology, and abolition of the clause on the neutral and nuclear-free status of the country.
