New law introduces confiscation of property over calls for sanctions

January 6, BPN. Both houses of the National Assembly secretly passed the bill “On Confiscation of Property” on December 21, while Alaksandr Łukašenka signed it into law on January 3.

It applies to Belarus-based property of legal and natural persons, directly or indirectly influencing decisions “to commit unfriendly acts by foreign governments,” says the law published on the National Legal Internet Portal.

Łukašenka gave the Council of Ministers six months to implement it. The cabinet will approve confiscations, authorizing the State Property Committee to file confiscation lawsuits with the Minsk Economic Court.

Belarusian authorities have imprisoned scores of political opponents over alleged calls for sanctions.
