Over 800 officials held accountable for corruption in 2022 – prosecutor general
February 22, BPN. Belarusian courts held 819 officials accountable for corruption in 2022, Prosecutor General Andrej Švied told the National Assembly.
Twenty-one of them held top posts, he said, as quoted by the state media on February 22.
The most common offences were theft by abuse of position and bribe-taking, the prosecutor general said.
The convicts included a former minister, company executives and local officials, including district executive committee heads and their deputies. A number of criminal cases were filed against members of the president’s talent pool.
Corruption in Belarus worsened over the past year, according to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) compiled annually by Berlin-based NGO Transparency International.
Belarus scored 39 points in 2022, ranking 91st together with Colombia and Moldova. It slipped nine places since 2021.
