Belarus’ employed workforce shrinking – official

April 3, BPN. The number of people employed in the Belarusian economy is decreasing, Iryna Kaścievič, minister of labor and social security, told Belarus’ STV.

The unemployment rate calculated by the International Labor Organization’s methods rose from 3.6 percent in 2022 to 3.8 percent, she said, describing the level as “healthy,” allowing people to compete for jobs in the labor market.

Job openings have been around 100,000 for years, she added.

The Belarusian labor market does not face serious issues despite Western sanctions affecting businesses, she said.

In January, a total of 4.173 million people were employed in the Belarusian economy. That was a decline from 4.193 million two months earlier.
