Two more years in prison for disabled activist Hundar

April 17, BPN. A court in Belarus has added two-and-a-half years to activist Uładzimir Hundar’s 18-year prison sentence.

This was his third criminal trial. “The sentence was two years and six months under Article 369 [insulting a representative of the state],” his wife, Alena Hundar, told BPN. She said he may spend a total of 20 years in a high-security corrective colony.

The trial began at a district court in Hrodna in late January. Hundar was charged with insulting prosecutor Ludmila Hierasimienka, who opposed him during his previous trial. The defendant, widely regarded as a political prisoner, refused to testify.

On October 17, the Hrodna Regional Court delivered a guilty verdict to 12 defendants in the high-profile “Aŭtuchovič case.” Hundar, an activist from Baranavičy, Brest region, was sentenced to 18 years in prison and a fine.

The man, who doesn’t have a leg, first went on trial in May 2021 on violence charges. The Brest Regional Court sentenced him to three years.
