KGB: terrorist attacks thwarted ahead of Victory Day
May 9, BPN. Ivan Tertel, the chairman of the Committee for State Security (KGB), has told the state media that terrorist attacks were prevented ahead of the May 9 holiday celebrating victory over Nazi Germany.
“According to our analysis, these developments were tied to May 9 in an attempt to stir up the situation. The head of state is aware of them. We arrested a certain number of individuals who were preparing terrorist attacks. And we know that [foreign] security services are behind this,” Tertel said.
According to him, “information about the relating facts” would be published on May 10. He pointed out attempts to “draw students into committing terrorist attacks.”
In March, the KGB reported the “liquidation” of a foreigner who had allegedly come to Belarus to commit a terrorist act. Shots were fired and a grenade was thrown, compelling an assault team to return fire, the state media said. The suspect was wounded and died on the way to hospital. The media presented him as a supporter of “fugitive extremists.”
A month ago, Tertel announced that citizens of Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine were detained for carrying out undercover operations. The KGB expects increased terrorist activity over the spring, he added.
