International Gymnastics Federation extends suspension of Belarusian athletes

May 12, BPN. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has extended the suspension of Belarusian and Russian athletes, its executive committee’s press office reports.

The FIG made the decision yesterday, after reviewing the situation of the two countries’ athletes and officials. The federation said it would monitor the developments and might reconsider the measures taken depending on the circumstances.

The FIG last extended the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in March, as the war in Ukraine continued.

Belarus and Russia were suspended from competitions in February 2022. The gymnastics federation canceled all its events in Russia and Belarus, prohibiting to display their national flags or play the national anthems at any FIG-sanctioned events until further notice.

This way, the federation demonstrated its position on Russia’s war against Ukraine and Belarus’ support of the aggression.
