Two Połack university instructors sentenced to 10 days in jail

May 25, BPN. A district judge in Navapołack, Viciebsk region, on May 24 sentenced two Połack State University professors to 10 days in jail for allegedly following social media outlets labeled by the government extremist.

Halina Šarahłazava, chair of the Geodesy and Geoinformation System Department, and Alona Chramcova, a world literature instructor, were arrested in a police raid on May 23 along with a dozen of other university employees, a source told BPN speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Law professor Siarhiej Hłazyryn and history professor Viktar Čaraŭko were tried on May 23, and are currently serving their 15-day sentences at the Połack detention center

The crackdown comes days after police arrested and jailed several doctors from the Navapołack City Hospital.

In late March, another series of arrests targeted local history museum workers. Some of them served jail terms for alleged minor offenses, including subscribing to and sharing content critical of the government.
