Polish president’s advisor says deployment of Russian nukes to break rules

May 26, BPN. Russia would break certain rules should it station its nukes in Belarus, said Marcin Przydacz, the Polish president’s international policy advisor.

The move would demonstrate a lack of Belarus’ sovereignty under Alaksandr Łukašenka and would be a step towards escalation, Polskie Radio quoted him as saying.

However, NATO – the most powerful military alliance with advanced weapons – would prevent any escalation and protect its members, Przydacz added.

On May 25, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu signed the terms of storage of Russian non-strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus. Two months earlier, Putin announced that Russia plans to construct the facility by July 1.

Belarusian leadership will not be authorized to control any of these weapons, Shoigu stressed.
