Opposition offers condolences to family of killed volunteer fighter

May 27, BPN. A EU-based Belarusian opposition group has offered its condolences to the family of a Belarusian volunteer soldier who died fighting in Ukraine.

Mirasłaŭ Łazoŭski, co-founder of the now-defunct Bieły Lehijon (White Legion) that opposed Belarus’ merger with Russia, served in the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment. He was killed near the eastern city of Bakhmut aged 49, and buried in Kyiv yesterday.

The United Transitional Cabinet said he was a true patriot and a hero. The group led by Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja, who claims to have won the presidential election in her country, said people like him “defend honor and dignity of Belarus and Belarusians because they fight on the side of truth.”

The Kalinoŭski regiment was formed in March 2022 by Belarusian volunteers who say that Russia’s defeat in Ukraine would weaken the authoritarian government in Minsk, closely allied with Moscow.

They also advocate Belarus’ entry into the European Union and NATO.
