Łukašenka: no rush to launch Union State single currency

May 29, BPN. A single currency for the Union State of Russia and Belarus “is not an easy process and, probably, not for today,” Alaksandr Łukašenka has told Elvira Nabiullina, the visiting head of Russia’s central bank, in Minsk.

“Some patriotically-minded people in Russia and Belarus” often bring up the issue, his press office quoted him as saying. “What is most important for me is a reserve currency.”

The single currency could be a new reserve currency which might be important as the world is moving away from the US dollar, Łukašenka suggested.

In late 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin cited the lack of single currency as he complained about insufficient integration of Belarus and Russia.
