Minsk to seek “multipolar world order” if elected to UN Security Council – foreign ministry

June 3, BPN. Belarus will promote a multipolar world order in case of its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

This world order should guarantee peace, security, stability and sustainable development for all countries without exceptions, it noted.

Belarus applied for one of the five non-permanent seats at the UN Security Council back in 2007. Slovenia submitted its application in December 2021. 

Eastern European countries are allocated one non-permanent seat for a term of two years. The voting will take place at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on June 6. 

Belarusian opposition seeks to ensure that authorities lose these elections.

The UN Security Council is one of the six principal bodies of the United Nations responsible for international peace and security.

It consists of five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms under regional quotas.
