Visit by Russia’s central bank head to Belarus “bad sign” – pundit

June 13, BPN. The recent visit by Elvira Nabiullina, head of Russia’s Central Bank, to Belarus is “a bad sign” in the context of the Union State’s single currency discussions, said political analyst Roza Turarbiekava.

Although the 28 integration programs approved by Vladimir Putin and Alexander Łukašenka in November 2021 do not foresee a common currency, the absorption of Belarus by Russia “can be implemented in different ways,” with single currency being another stage of integration, she told the participants in an online discussion on the future of Belarus.

Nabiullina visited Belarus on May 29 to attend a meeting of the Interbank Currency Council of the central banks of Belarus and Russia.

A single currency for the Union State of Russia and Belarus “is not an easy process and, probably, not for today,” Alaksandr Łukašenka told her the same day.
