Opposition leader urges EU to appoint special representative for Belarus

June 29, BPN. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has called on the European Union (EU) to appoint a special representative for Belarus as she addressed the first meeting of the EU-Belarus Consultative Group in Brussels.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrel attended the meeting, her aide Franak Viačorka told BPN.

The appointment of an EU special representative for Belarus will take the work on Belarus in Brussels to a new level, Cichanoŭskaja noted. “It will help align the work of various EU institutions, coordinate efforts among the EU member states and to lead on Belarus with our friends in the US, UK, Canada as well as international organizations.”

“We need to expand the space for Belarus in the EU but also to make the EU better understood and appreciated by millions of Belarusians,” she stressed.
