Supreme Court shuts down Belarusian Greens Party
July 27, BPN. The Supreme Court has issued a “politically motivated” decision to shut down the Belarusian Greens Party, a source in the party has told BPN.
“The fact that almost all parties are being liquidated tells us that cleansing is underway in Belarus ahead of the 2024 election,” they said.
A justice ministry official told the judge that the Greens had less members than required, while a party representative said that officials had failed to follow proper procedures to shut down the party.
In late 2022, Alaksandar Łukašenka called for disbanding parties whose activities run counter to “the basic principles of internal and foreign policy.”
On February 14, he signed a law requiring all parties to re-register based on more rigorous membership criteria.
On July 20, the Supreme Court closed down the opposition Conservative Christian Party, and four days later, the pro-governmental Belarusian Patriotic Party.
