Journalist Karniej’s extremism charge trial to begin on March 19

March 2, Pozirk. Journalist Ihar Karniej will go on trial at the Minsk City Court on March 19, according to an electronic schedule. He is accused of joining an extremist group with the purpose of committing an extremist crime.
Judge Siarhiej Kacar will preside over the proceedings. Since 2020, Kacar has handed down about 170 rulings under the Administrative Offenses Code and about 30 rulings under the Criminal Code, citing articles typically used for reprisals, according to the Civil Control of the Judiciary.
On July 17, 2023, the journalist’s daughter said officers raided his home and arrested him for 10 days .
Karniej had a long history of working with independent media.
