March 20, Pozirk. Climate change has negatively affected conditions for growing Belarus’ cash crops, such as flax and potatoes, a weather service official has said.
Some 20 years ago no one could imagine that sunflower, grapes and melons would be cultivated in Belarus, Kaciaryna Istomina of the National Weather and Environment Monitoring Service has told journalists.
Belarus’ average temperature has been rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius every decade, her associate Śviatłana Kuźmič added.
From 2014 to 2023, the average temperature was 8.1 degrees Celsius, while in the last five years it was 8.3 degrees Celsius, exceeding the standard level by 1.1 degrees Celsius, the official said.
