South Ossetian delegation may be invited to Belarus

April 10, Pozirk. Union State Secretary Dmitry Mezentsev and South Ossetian envoy Znaur Gassiev have discussed Georgia’s breakaway territory’s participation in events in Belarus marking the 80th anniversary since the latter was freed from Nazi invaders, the Union State reported.
The news comes as South Ossetia is courting Minsk for official recognition of its independence.
Last August, South Ossetian politician Vyacheslav Gobozov told RIA Novosti that South Ossetia sought to join the Union State and needed Minsk’s recognition.
In his opinion, “sooner or later” Alaksandar Łukašenka will realize the benefits of recognition for Belarus.
Ossetian and Russian forced took control of South Ossetia during the full-scale Russian-Georgian war in August 2008.
Since the 2008 war, Georgia and a significant part of the international community have regarded South Ossetia as occupied by Russia.
Nauru, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria and Venezuela are the five UN members to recognize its independence.
