Maternity capital benefits 136,000 families – ministry

April 18, Pozirk. Maternity capital has been allocated for 136,502 large families as of April 1, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security reported.

The government launched the program in 2015. It provides for lump sum payments to parents upon the birth or adoption of the third and subsequent children.

The money is deposited on bank accounts until children turn 18, but families can access it earlier if they prove to need it urgently for housing, education or health care.

Despite the program, the population of Belarus declined to just 9.2 million on January 1, 2023 from 9.4 million three years earlier.

On January 1, 2024, the government increased the one-time payment by 5.1 percent to 31,480 Belarusian rubels (about $10,000).
