500 MEPs join solidarity campaign to support jailed Belarus’ dissidents

March 13, Pozirk. The European Parliament (EP) has launched #EPStandsBYyou solidarity campaign to support Belarusians imprisoned in politically-motivated cases, the press office of Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja reported yesterday.
The EP President Roberta Metsola and Cichanoŭskaja lead the campaign involving some 500 MEPs of various political affiliations, it noted.
“From March 10 to March 13, MEPs will sign and send postcards to Belarusian political prisoners – people who are illegally held in prisons of [Alaksandar] Łukašenka’s regime,” the message reads.
The campaign aims to remind hundreds of jailed Belarusians that they are not alone and that their release remains a priority of the international community, it stressed.
As of March 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,215 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
