At least 20 Belarusian athletes qualify for Olympics
May 3, Pozirk. Twenty Belarusian athletes have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics to compete as neutrals, the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation (BSSF) reported.
Aryjan Ciutryn, Mahamied Kadzimahamiedaŭ, Alaksandar Hyštyn, Dzianis Chramiankoŭ, Iryna Kuračkina and Vanesa Kaladzinskaja qualified in freestyle wrestling.
Siuzana Valadźko, Jaŭhien Cichancaŭ and Eduard Ziaziulin will compete in weightlifting; Illa Šymanovič, Anastasija Škurdaj and Alina Zmuško, in swimming; Ivan Litvinovič and Vijaleta Bardziloŭskaja, in trampoline; Jaŭhien Załaty and Taćciana Klimovič, in rowing; Abubakar Chasłachanaŭ in Greco Roman wrestling; Uładzisłaŭ Dziemieš in shooting; and Hieorhij Hurcyjeŭ in taekwondo.
One athlete will also be able to compete in cycling. Olympic qualifications in tennis will be held on June 10, the BSSF said.
After Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) urged sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions.
It later recommended that some of them should be allowed as neutral athletes under certain conditions, such as not supporting the war.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed neutrals to compete in the 2024 Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.
