Cichanoŭskaja urges US lawmakers to pass Belarus Democracy Act as soon as possible

July 12, Pozirk. Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja met with Hakeem Jeffries, the US House of Representatives minority leader, in Washington on July 11, her aide Franak Viačorka has told Pozirk.

The Belarusian opposition leader pointed out the need for adopting Belarus Democracy Act of 2024 as soon as possible. The legislation provides for support of Belarusian civil society, independent media, victims of repression and cultural initiatives.

Cichanoŭskaja informed the US lawmaker of recent politically-motivated convictions in Belarus and efforts by her camp to persuade Meta and Google to do more for countering disinformation and supporting the Belarusian independent media.   

She also discussed ways to prevent the circumvention of sanctions.

Earlier the same day, Cichanoŭskaja met with Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Iceland’s foreign minister, on the sidelines of a NATO summit to rally support for Belarus’ political prisoners and independent media.

The Belarusian politician also took part in a Captive Nations Week discussion at the Victims of Communism Museum.
