Łukašenka appoints deputy defense minister

July 17, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka has appointed Alaksandar Navumienka as deputy defense minister.
His predecessor Andrej Žuk, in office since March 2021, was transferred to the reserve on retirement, Łukašenka’s press office reported.
According to the defense ministry’s website, Žuk oversaw the ministry’s personnel policy, combat training and military education, including the Military Academy and the Suvorov Military School, as well as the 72nd Guards Combined Training Center and the Sports Committee of the Armed Forces.
Before his appointment, Navumienka served as commander of the Northwestern Operational Command.
He holds degrees from the Tank Command School in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and Belarus’ Military Academy.
After serving with the 30th Guards Irkutsk-Pinsk Division, he was transferred to the 5th Detached Special Purpose Brigade and appointed as its commander in 2010.
He also served with the Main Intelligence Directorate and the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff.
Alaksandar Bas will take the helm of the Northwestern Operational Command. He has been dismissed as head of the Armed Forces Main Combat Training Directorate.
Bas graduated from the Tank Command School in Chelyabinsk, Russia, and served with the 50th Guards Motorized Rifle Division, the 38th Detached Guards Mobile Brigade of the Special Operations Forces, the Ground Forces HQ, the Main Military Inspectorate and the Western Operational Command.
