German foreign ministry defending Krieger sentenced to death
July 19, Pozirk. The German foreign ministry is aware that Belarus has sentenced German national Rico Krieger to death, the ministry’s press office told Pozirk.
The Federal Foreign Office and the embassy in Minsk are providing Krieger with consular assistance and actively defending his interests before the Belarusian authorities, it said.
The ministry denounced the death penalty as a cruel, inhumane and unacceptable form of punishment.
Germany advocates for its abolition across the world, it said.
It noted that the details of consular cases cannot be disclosed for safety reasons.
The Viasna Human Rights Center has confirmed that the Minsk Regional Court sentenced the 30-year-old German national to death.
Earlier today, media reported that the sentence was issued on June 24.
Investigators accused Krieger of spying, terrorism, mercenarism and other serious crimes.
