Analyst: Wiktorin ideal figure to seek compromise between Belarus, EU

September 6, Pozirk. Andrea Wiktorin is an ideal figure to look for a compromise between Belarus and Germany and the EU, Alexander Friedman told Pozirk, following the diplomat’s appointment as Germany’s charge d’affaires in Belarus. She probably views the appointment as an exciting challenge, he said.
“Firstly, judging by her age [the diplomat was born in 1957], her career has entered the final stage, and it is very symbolic that she will spend it in Belarus, where she worked multiple times, at the embassy and the European Union level,” Friedman said.
“Secondly, she really understands and has expertise on the post-Soviet space,” he said. “I understand that she was very successful in Armenia, which is also a very complicated region. It appears that relations between the EU and Armenia improved and deepened during her stay there. Apparently, she made a significant contribution to the current rapprochement between Armenia and the EU.”
“And, of course, her work in Belarus in the late 2010s is also important, because she is acquainted with many Belarusian decision-makers and has interacted with them. In this respect, work in Belarus will be clearer and easier for her,” Friedman said.
“As far as I can see, official propaganda has taken her appointment quite calmly, and there have been no serious attacks on her,” he added.
