Łukašenka plans Victory Day amnesty for 8,000 convicts

April 24, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka is preparing an amnesty program for approximately 8,000 convicts in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, according to a statement from his press office. The initiative is based on a bill submitted by the government to the lower house of parliament.

The proposed amnesty introduces several new elements compared to similar programs in previous years. Notably, individuals suffering from certain illnesses will now be eligible for full exemption from punishment.

Under the draft bill, prisoners over the age of 70 who have no prior criminal record and are serving sentences of up to six years may have their punishment reduced to restricted freedom under home confinement.

In addition, a partial amnesty would apply to individuals convicted of reckless crimes resulting in death. Their sentences would be shortened by one year.

To qualify for the amnesty, convicts must fully compensate the damages caused by their crimes and receive a positive assessment from prison authorities.

Over the past five years, Łukašenka has announced four clemency programs.
