Washington extends national emergency for Belarus

June 12, Pozirk. United States President Donald Trump has extended for another year the national emergency with respect to Belarus starting on June 16, says a document published by the US Federal Register.
Harmful actions and policies by certain Belarusian officials as well as “long-standing abuses aimed at suppressing democracy and the exercise of human rights” threaten the US national security and foreign policy, it noted.
President George W. Bush introduced the state of emergency against Belarus by Executive Order 13405 in 2006, following the disputed presidential election and the conviction of presidential hopeful Alaksandar Kazulin. It has been extended annually for the past 18 years. In 2021, another executive order expanded the scope of the emergency.
In 2006, restrictions affected Alaksandar Łukašenka and several high-ranking officials, including the deputy head of his administration, Natalla Piatkievič, currently serving as deputy prime minister.
