Cichanoŭskaja: coming months decisive for Belarus, region

July 15, Pozirk. The coming months might be decisive for Moldova, Belarus and the region, not only for Ukraine, Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja said at the 107th Rose-Roth seminar in Brussels, organized by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in partnership with the European Parliament.
The politician said the destinies of Belarus and Ukraine were interconnected, and the success of Ukraine may open a window of opportunity for Belarus.
Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime is weak, fragile and completely dependent on Russian President Vladimir Putin, she said.
“Putin and Łukašenka, they are not interested in peace, they want the war to continue. Because the war, it fuels their regimes and justifies repression. That’s why when we deal with them, we must be firm and decisive,” the opposition leader stressed.
In this respect, she backed US Senator Lindsey Graham’s proposal on “sledgehammer” sanctions against Russia, and called for similar measures at the European level.
According to Cichanoŭskaja change in Belarus may trigger change in Russia.
“As the democratic forces of Belarus, we are ready to lead our country toward democracy and a European path of development. We are already preparing reforms that will help integrate Belarus into the European and Euro-Atlantic community,” she said.
