Belarus opens criminal investigation into Biełaruśkalij emergency

November 1, Pozirk. The Investigative Committee’s Salihorsk district department has opened a criminal investigation into the injury of workers in yesterday’s incident at the state-owned potash miner Biełaruśkalij.

Inspectors suspect officials of violating safety regulations.

“The investigations and operations group continues to work at the scene,” the committee said. “Inspectors have seized technical and production documentation, scheduled expert studies and interrogated witnesses.”

According to the agency, the victims are getting medical attention after receiving injuries of varying severity.

According to Pozirk, the Biełaruśkalij incident was reported on Friday afternoon.

Four workers were hospitalized with chemical burns and other injuries in an explosion of a hydrochloric acid container at the Salihorsk-based company.

The injured workers were taken to Salihorsk’s Central District Hospital, the health ministry said yesterday.

The explosion occurred at the electromembrane process shop, said the emergencies ministry.

The health ministry sent four ambulances to the site, while the emergencies ministry deployed eight units of equipment.
