Belarus opens criminal investigation into Biełaruśkalij explosion

November 1, Pozirk. The Investigative Committee’s Salihorsk district department has opened a criminal investigation into an explosion at the state-owned potash miner Biełaruśkalij that injured four workers on October 31.
Inspectors suspect officials of violating safety regulations.
“The investigation team continues to work at the scene,” the committee said. “Investigators have seized technical and production documentation, scheduled examinations by experts and interrogated witnesses.”
The victims are being treated for injuries of varying severity, the committee said.
Four workers were hospitalized with chemical burns and other injuries in the explosion of a hydrochloric acid container at the Salihorsk-based company.
The injured workers were taken to Salihorsk’s Central District Hospital, the health ministry said yesterday.
The explosion occurred at the electromembrane process shop, said the emergencies ministry.
