Łukašenka admits Soviet-era public holiday not too popular
November 7, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka has acknowledged that only a minority of Belarusians honors the anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, observed on November 7.
Visiting the Homiel region’s Žytkavičy district, Łukašenka said, “There are about 30 percent here who respect this holiday. We do not want any more revolutions, but there are people who have a positive attitude toward this holiday. So let them have it.”
“It’s an ok holiday. We have modernized it,” the Belarusian ruler added, according to his press office.
Belarus remains the only former Soviet republic that observes the date as an official public holiday. It is also celebrated in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, according to the state-run newspaper SB. Belarus Segodnya.
