Belarus’ top diplomat pledges “unwavering support” for Cuban people

February 16, Pozirk. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryžankoŭ has expressed “unwavering support for the brotherly Cuban people” as he met Cuban Ambassador Santiago Perez Benitez, the foreign ministry’s press office reports.

The Belarusian top diplomat reaffirmed “Minsk’s position on the unacceptability of unilateral coercive measures,” most likely referring to US President Donald Trump’s executive order on threats from Cuba signed in late January. Washington said it would impose new tariffs on any countries supplying oil to Cuba, citing protection of US national security and foreign policy from the Cuban regime’s as reasons.

Earlier this month, Minsk issued a statement expressing concerns about energy supplies to Cuba. The diplomats opposed the “use of unilateral coercive measures,” pointing out risks of a humanitarian crisis and unpredictable consequences in the Caribbean in case of further escalation.
