EU to extend sanctions against Belarus by a year
February 19, Pozirk. The European Union is set to extend individual and sectoral sanctions against Belarus by one year, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda told journalists on February 19, Delfi reported.
“If someone is thinking is under a delusion that sanctions will soon be lifted, I must immediately reassure people: sanctions against Belarus, both individual and sectoral, will be extended by 12 more months. This must be done next week,” he said.
He added that the EU ambassadors unanimously approved the extension, noting that there are no signs that Belarusian authorities changed their behavior.
The Lithuanian president pointed out that Belarus is a co-aggressor in the Russian war against Ukraine. He added that although Belarus freed some political prisoners, it has imprisoned more dissidents.
