Cichanoŭskaja discusses sanctions on Łukašenka with Latvia’s top diplomat

March 13, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja discussed maintaining tough sanctions against Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime with Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže yesterday in Riga.
The meeting also focused on regional security, deepening cooperation with Ukraine, as well as humanitarian efforts to secure the release of jailed Belarusian dissidents, the Belarusian politician noted on X.
Cichanoŭskaja expressed gratitude to Latvia for its attention to Belarus and support of exiled Belarusians, advocating for technical solutions that would allow people to remain mobile and stay in touch with their families.
The politician stressed the importance of ensuring that Belarusians in Latvia feel safe and are not left to address their problems alone, adding that the regime in Minsk must not be allowed to isolate Belarusian society.
Pressure on Minsk must be increased, including through strengthened and aligned European Union sanctions amid intensifying reprisals in Belarus, the Latvian foreign ministry reported, citing Braže. Circumvention of sanctions via Belarus must be prevented, she added.
The diplomat reaffirmed Latvia’s demand on Belarus to release all political prisoners, end their forced deportations and ensure the safe return of unlawfully deported Ukrainian children to Ukraine.
Braže pledged Riga’s continued support for the Belarusian opposition’s efforts to achieve a free and democratic Belarus.
Yesterday, Cichanoŭskaja also met with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to discuss sanctions and coordinated efforts within North-Baltic Eight (NB8).
