Ex-leader of Belarus’ Jewish community dies

April 24, Pozirk. Uładzimir Čarnicki, head of the Union of the Belarusian Jewish Associations and Communities from 2017 to 2021, has died at the age of 81.

He is credited with strengthening the union’s international position, directing work to commemorate Holocaust, preserve Jewish heritage, improve Jewish cemeteries and install memorial signs at massacre sites.

Founded in 1991, the union was led by architect Leanid Levin (1936-2014), a designer of the Chatyń memorial, until 2014. Barys Herscień was in charge from 2014 to 2017, and businessman Aleh Rahatnikaŭ leads it at present.

Čarnicki was also engaged in business, specializing in computer technologies.
