Belarus’ birth rates halve under Łukašenka’s rule

April 29, Pozirk. A total of 54,257 children were born in Belarus in 2025, roughly half of the 101,144 births recorded in 1995, according to Pozirk’s analysis of the National Statistical Committee’s (Biełstat) data.
Births declined across all regions, with the steepest fall in the Viciebsk region, from 12,942 to 5,773, while the city of Minsk experienced the mildest decline, from 15,121 to 9,543.
Belarus’ population fell by 11.3 percent or 1,154,323 people since January 1, 1995 to 9,056,080 on January 1 this year. All six Belarusian regions recorded population declines, with Viciebsk leading the trend and seeing its population fall by more than 25 percent: from 1,426,433 to 1,060,687.
Biełstat’s data does not take into account the mass emigration of people from Belarus for political and economic reasons after the 2020 political crisis.
