Opposition group unveils report on “Łukašenka’s spies” disguised as diplomats
May 22, Pozirk. BelPol, an investigative group consisting of former Belarusian law-enforcement officers, has published the first part of a report disclosing the identities of “more than 100 Łukašenka spies working under diplomatic cover” in 40 countries around the world.
In a YouTube video, which runs for 75 minutes, BelPol’s Maćviej Kuprejčyk unveils a gallery of 60 alleged spies, highlighting their alleged involvement with intelligence agencies, false identities, foreign trips and diplomatic postings. According to Kuprejčyk, the agents are embedded within Belarusian diplomatic missions in, among others, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. The largest Belarusian spy ring allegedly operates in Russia, spanning consulates and embassy offices in different cities and working hand in hand with Russia’s Federal Security Service to monitor the Belarusian community.
The Belarusian spies mostly hide behind the diplomatic titles of first and second secretary, counsellor and military attaché and report to the Main Foreign Intelligence Directorate of the Central Apparatus of the Committee for State Security (KGB) and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Kuprejčyk said.
Their main objective is to legitimize Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime through disinformation and lobbying and to facilitate the circumvention of sanctions, he said. They also collect information about Belarusian opposition forces, infiltrate their ranks, discredit their representatives, lure Łukašenka’s opponents into Belarus and also provide various services for Russian intelligence agencies, he added.
