Belarus launches four-day drill near Lithuanian, Polish borders
September 15, Pozirk. The Western Operational Command has launched a four-day command-staff exercise near Belarus’ western borders under the leadership of Pavieł Muraviejka, chief of the General Staff, the defense ministry’s press office reports.
The Hoža and Ružany training grounds in the Hrodna and Brest regions, respectively, as well as a range in Brest, will host the maneuvers. Hoža is located in close proximity to the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, while sites in the Brest region are about 15 and 60 kilometers from the border with Poland.
The exercise will focus on command and control of operational command forces during a strategic operation, the ministry noted. Its main goal is to train command structures, formations and military units to carry out tasks jointly during military operations.
“The drill program does not include offensive operations,” Muraviejka stressed. “Therefore, any speculation, discussion or claims that the Belarusian Armed Forces are allegedly preparing to launch an offensive against neighboring countries are completely baseless and have no factual basis”
The drill was designed to assess how well the troops have adapted to modern warfare and how effectively they can incorporate its elements into their operations, he noted.
The official added that the exercise would not involve large-scale movements of troops or equipment and would focus on border defense, countering drones and enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups, as well as isolating affected areas.
Minsk has not disclosed the number of troops, saying only that the number of participants and major weapon systems involved in the drill does not exceed the notification limits set out in the 2011 Vienna Document.
The Belarusian army has been frequently conducting exercise amid tensions with the West and Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, in which Minsk supports Moscow.
