Minsk accuses NATO of planning attacks on Belarus
October 14, Pozirk. The Belarusian foreign ministry has “strongly condemned” remarks by Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, commander of NATO’s Allied Command Operations, about potential strikes on Belarus.
The statement comes days after Gen. Grynkewich made clear at a security forum in Warsaw last week that NATO takes the threat of a Russian attack seriously. In his speech to the Warsaw Security Forum, Gen. Grynkewich did not mention Russia but his message was clearly directed at Moscow.
The alliance would seek to defeat invading forces, sever their supply lines and cripple their command systems, said Grynkewich, outlining his theory of victory. The Wall Street Journal quoted him as saying that NATO would use long-range missiles to strike Russian command posts and air defenses in the Kaliningrad exclave and near St. Petersburg, as well as in Belarus.
Although the general emphasized that NATO would only hit back after a hypothetical invasion, Minsk described what it called “the concept of preemptive strikes on Belarusian territory” using drones and ground-based robotic systems as part of NATO’s systematic “aggressive rhetoric.”
“Without any threats from Belarus and without any real grounds for conflict, NATO is making plans to build up its military presence near the borders and to launch strikes against the territory of a sovereign state,” the statement reads.
Belarusian diplomats accused the alliance of laying the groundwork for military escalation and aggression. “Belarus has never threatened anyone,” they stressed. “Our military doctrine is purely defensive in nature. We consistently advocate for openness, de-escalation and an equal dialogue.”
The foreign ministry urged its Western counterparts to show “common sense and start working together to restore mutual trust.”
