Aĺhierd Bacharevič’s novel branded extremist – SB. Belarus Segodnya
May 18, BPN. Authorities in Belarus have branded Sabaki Jeuropy (Dogs of Europe), a novel by Aĺhierd Bacharevič, extremist because it stirs up hatred and mass disorder, reported SB. Belarus Segodnya, a newspaper of Aliaksandr Lukašenka’s Presidential Administration, in its May 17 edition.
Published in 2017, the 900-page novel won the Belarusian PEN’s Year’s Best Book Award, an independent reader award and the Jerzy Giedroyc Second Prize.
On May 16, police raided the Knihaŭka book store in Minsk immediately after its launch party, seizing 200 titles, including Bacharevič’s novel and George Orwell’s 1984. The store owner and a manager were arrested.
Aĺhierd Bacharevič, 47, is a renowned author of Belarusian-language stories and novels.
