Belarus says TV ban shows Lithuania’s urge to suppress dissent

September 22, BPN. A ban on Belarusian television channels in Lithuania demonstrates its desire to “suppress any dissent,” the Belarusian information ministry has said.

The ministry called the Lithuanian parliament’s decision to temporarily ban the broadcasting of Russian and Belarusian television and radio programs “a clear desire to artificially restrict Lithuanian citizens’ access to alternative information.”

“These decisions clearly show that all the statements by the Lithuanian authorities regarding freedom of speech and democracy are purely declarative,” it said.

On September 22, the Lithuanian parliament passed an amendment to temporarily ban the distribution of radio and TV programs, including online, produced by individuals directly or indirectly controlled or funded by Russia and Belarus.

The rule would be in effect until October 16, 2024.
