Death penalty for high treason approved in first reading

November 7, BPN. A bill calling for harsher punishment for high treason has been approved in the first reading in the Belarusian parliament.

It would allow for capital punishment for officials and soldiers.

The parliament’s press office sees the bill would act as a deterrent for “destructive elements” and a demonstration of the government’s “resolute fight” traitors.

Belarus is the only country in Europe to use the death penalty.
