At least 1,102 nonprofit organizations shut down since 2020

December 8, BPN. In the period that followed the 2020 presidential election and ended on November 30, 2022 the Belarusian civic sector lost at least 1,102 nonprofit organizations (NPOs), such as associations, trade unions, foundations and NGOs, the Lawtrend human rights group said in a report.

By comparison, 1,057 NPOs were shut down by the end of October 2022, and 1,020 by the end of September 2022.

More Belarusians were prosecuted for allegedly establishing extremist groups and participating in them, Lawtrend said. Extremism charges are often target activists and members of civil society organizations.
