Belarusian opposition leader, former Polish president meet in Gdańsk

December 8, BPN. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa had a meeting in Gdańsk.

“I met the legendary leader of Polish Solidarity, Lech Wałęsa. He congratulated Aleś Bialacki and all Belarusians on Nobel Peace Prize. He said that in his time, this award gave a huge boost to Polish ‘Solidarity.’ President Wałęsa convinced me that we will win. I can’t disagree,” she tweeted on December 8.

Wałęsa, the first leader of the Solidarity trade union, a key outpost of anti-authoritarian opposition in the Polish People’s Republic, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983.

Jailed Belarusian human rights defender Bialacki, was awarded the prize in October 2022 together with the human rights organizations Memorial, Russia, and Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine.
