Lithuania’s MPs pushing for international investigation of Belarusian regime

December 9, BPN. The Lithuanian parliament unanimously adopted a resolution, calling for the establishment of an international tribunal to investigate crimes against humanity committed by the Belarusian regime, Delfi reported.

The Seimas also called for new, free and transparent elections in Belarus, an immediate end to the crackdown on Belarusian civil society, and guarantees for freedom of expression, media, assembly and association.

Lithuanian MPs also demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Aleś Bialacki, opposition activist Maryja Kaleśnikava, politicians Mikałaj Statkievič, Pavieł Seviaryniec and others.

The Seimas also stressed the need to expand sanctions against companies and individuals linked to the Belarusian regime and responsible for politically-motivated persecution of Belarusians, human rights abuses, and complicity in illegal migration.

The MPs also suggested limiting any support to the Belarusian state institutions, investigating authorities’ involvement in Russia’s war on Ukraine and declaring Belarusian security and law enforcement agencies terrorist groups.
