Inmate dies in penal colony – rights group

December 23, BPN. An inmate serving her sentence in a women’s colony No. 4 in Homiel died in the night from December 14 to December 15, Malady.Team, a human rights Telegram channel, reports.

“One of the prisoners was urgently taken from the colony’s medical box to the Homiel city hospital’s intensive care unit. The woman could not be saved,” it said.

It quoted doctors as saying her death was caused by the “negligence of the medics of Penal Colony No. 4” who “did not want to take the prisoner to a civilian hospital until the last moment.”

Her name or conviction were not reported.

Political prisoner Maryja Kaleśnikava is serving her sentence in the same colony.

She is held in the colony’s medical unit after briefly staying at a municipal emergency hospital for surgery, diagnosed with perforated ulcer and peritonitis.

Former presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka’s campaign said her hospitalization was a result of ill-treatment in prison.
