Political prisoners’ relatives say not calling for liberation at any cost
January 24, BPN. The association of Belarusian political prisoners’ relatives has said it does not call for lifting sanctions or other deals with authorities “at any cost.”
On January 10, the group called on the international community for “more decisive actions” to free their loved ones.
The association now quotes EU spokesman Peter Stano as saying that the bloc has “several tools” to address Belarus’ political prisoners issue and also considers “other measures.”
“One of the goals of our open letter and of the Association of Relatives and Former Political Prisoners is to encourage the EU to use those ‘other measures.’ By standing together, we will show the EU our interest in liberation of our loved ones,” it says in a statement.
As of January 23, the open letter was signed by 79 former political prisoners and political prisoners’ relatives.
